Wood carvings from Dongyang are usually created from hard woods or box wood. Precious woods such as sandalwood, mahogany and rosewood are popular materials among Dongyang craftsmen. Precious woods are well known for their longevity and unique aromatic fragrances.

Craftsmen from Dongyang aim to preserve the natural beauty and texture of the wood by creating designs which suit the natural elements of the wood. Relief carving is the main technique used to carve the detailed designs into the surface of the wood. Most patterns are carved over the entire surface give the carving a three-dimensional element.

Dongyang wood carvings have been transported to over fifty countries and can be found in many art collections and museums throughout China. Dongyang continues to be one of the central places for wood carving with many craftsmen specializing in the craft. Its exquisite designs and emphasis on the natural beauty of the wood have led it to become a distinguished part of Chinese folk culture.

   The annual contest, put on by the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science, showcases the colorful creatures typically beneath reach and awards prizes in three categories: macro, fish or marine animal portrait, and wide angle.

   At competition more than 700 works were presented, however these 14 photos were recognized the best by means of Internet vote.
