Gypsies in England
By
25 years ago, some punks had left London.
Protesting against the political leaders of that time, they moved to the countryside.
Their group eventually began to grow, becoming a real camp.
The most interesting is that the community still exists.
They live in wagons, which move across the country.

I’ve seen many gypsy and tinker sites in U.K. and none of them looked like these pics… Such tumbledown caravans would not be allowed on any of the roads in Britain. The people I saw lived in luxury vans and trailers.Only the pic with the Windmills in the background must be fairly modern. They are called “The travellors” in U.K.The beautiful ornate gypsy caravans are in short supply, but I’ve seen a couple travelling with the occasional circus (carried on the back of a big truck)….

Some remarkable portraits. There are several thousand Gypsys in the NYC area and an excellent film was made about their current lives. One thing that I remember is that if blond hair appears on a child, it is an auspicious sign. Surprised to see so may blond-headed kids in these photos. In most gyp groups, blond hair is rare since the antecedants are frequently from non-Nordic countries (Romania and other Eastern European countries though not just from these areas). Thanks for sharing. A book that was published about 1980 “Berkeley USA” has a profile of a Berkeley street-person who used the name “Gypsy” and was quite revealing.

Joe Kempkes: You are talking about the romani gypsies. There is a sizable minority of Romani people in Romania, of 2.46% of the total population – they are the second largest ethnic minority after hungarians. As far as I know they are considered to have come to the Eastern European countries from the Indian subcontinent.

These are not Gypsies. They are tinker/travellers who have opted out of society, except that they probably still claim state benefits, use the NHS, trepass on land andd leave it in a sorry state, and who pays for their benefits, NHS services, clean up after they have moved on, why, it is the rest of the society they have opted out of via our taxes. Stunning photography though!
